Through the Canvas celebrates the Design Studio conceived and directed in 2004 by Ricardo Flores and Eva Prats for students of architecture at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. The three parts of the book - 'De Hooch's Rooms': an introduction of the theme to the students, 'The Exercises': the work in progress of the studio itself, and 'Epilogue': a final conclusion through a series of articles by the members of the Jury - follow the sequence in which the theme was introduced, developed and debated during the week-long studio." "Based on the Dutch painter Pieter de Hooch's work, Flores Prats propose an exercise of architectural design through observation, strongly linked to the act of the making of things by hand. This studio, the big room where the workshop took place, contained people and work for five days. The accumulation - of drawings, models, photographs, dust, and tiredness - allowed the overlapping of different materials, producing new ideas which at the time sparked new work." "The effort of this publication has been in trying to reflect and reproduce this intensity, and to give continuity to a mass of material by putting together most of the drawings and photographs taken in situ. The idea of the book is not to favour the finished objects - the photographs - but to underline the process by which the projects came about, taking the intermediate material as the valuable product from where the final proposal can be seen. Correspondingly, the book contains not only drawings of completed projects, but more about the material produced during the evolution of the workshop.

In 2014, Flores & Prats redesigned Barcelona’s Pau i Justícia building as a theater, creative space and drama school. This publication documents the process, highlighting the historic elements of the existing building that were preserved. The Sala Beckett is a theater, but above all it is a space for creation and meeting. It was born from the need for a new space for the small theater in the Gràcia neighborhood, which reached the limit of capacity. The Barcelona City Council granted the building of the old Cooperativa Paz y Justicia, which maintains its structure and two large naves with a central passage as a lobby. Sala Beckett is a space where the objective is not to make products that work, but products that question, that create doubts, that want to change things with a critical spirit.

Almost all of the seven texts of this anthology revolves around this same topic: drawing. There are subtle variations in the inception and focus of each of the seventeen texts but, as a whole, the book can be read as a continuous monologue that keeps going back to that same core idea, almost compulsively. Flores & Prats believe in the capacity of drawing by hand to generate multiple and complex strata of knowledge about a space or a place, so they use it to guide the successive steps in their design process. Their obsession on drawing, though, is a form of optimistic resistance, believing that the tools of architectural representation, if used with intensity, rigour and passion, can still help us decipher the world that surrounds us.
